Collections

The museum holds documents, photographs and other artefacts that tell the stories of Ōtaki's people and events from the past. These include:

Records of organisations

  • Ōtaki Borough Council

  • Tennis club 

  • Swimming club 

  • Indoor Bowling Club

Archival material

  • War Service records for individuals who served in World War 1 and World War 2

  • Scrapbooks of press cuttings going back 100 years

  • Oral history records

  • Maps – many original, hand drawn – from the Tararua to the sea; from Te Horo to Manakau

  • Photographs and exhibits from previous exhibitions

  • Photographs – originals and digital copies (available in Past Perfect)

  • A range of artefacts donated by members of the community (includes adzes and small farm machinery such as early seed drills)

Specific collections

  • The Small Family Collection

    • Photos and domestic artefacts from the family of William and Mary Small who lived in Ōtaki Gorge Road from 1862

  •  The Wallace Collection

    • Photos and farming artefacts from the family of James Howard Wallace, born in 1854, grandson of Tamihana Te Rauparaha
