New Exhibition: Stories of Ōtaki Beach opens 9th March

From pā and kainga to baches and seaside villages – stories about the people

and changing character of Ōtaki Beach

ngā tāngata me te huri haere o te āhua o te tahamoana o Ōtaki

Our next museum exhibition presents stories of Ōtaki Beach.

These include the early 19 th century arrival of Te Rauparaha and Ngāti Raukawa and life at

the beach, and later the impacts of the arrival of whalers, traders and missionaries. Also

covered are the changes in the area: types of holidays, housing developments, beach

activities including the Surf Club, the natural environment and the dangers of the sea.

The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 9 March.
